Kathak Dance July 25 – July 31, 2020
Introductory training for Kathak style dancing by Kishori Devi.
The Flamenco dance style, which Kishori studied before going to India, originated from Kathak dancing and was brought to Spain where it developed its own character and style.
In the video below, Kishori shows how Kathak dancing is more flowing and less stylistic or ritualistic than other Indian classical dance forms. This gives the Kathak dance style a more graceful and feminine appearance.
You will learn the dance shown in the video below. Kishori will also show the similarities and differences between Kathak and Flamenco dance styles.
History & Evolution
Kathak is one of the main genres of ancient Indian classical dance and is traditionally regarded to have originated from the travelling bards of North India known as Kathakars or storytellers. The Kathakars wandered around and communicated legendary stories via music, dance and songs. The genre developed during the Bhakti movement, the trend of theistic devotion. The Kathakars communicate stories through rhythmic foot movements, hand gestures, facial expressions and eye work. This performing art incorporates great Indian epics, especially from the life of Lord Krishna.
Association with the Bhakti Movement
The development of Kathak during the era of the Bhakti movement predominantly focussed on the lilas of Lord Krishna and his eternal love Radhika or Radha found in texts like the ‘Bhagavata Purana’ which were spectacularly performed by the Kathak artists.
